When Governor Christie Whitman was looking for innovative and successful educational models to replicate across the state, she visited the Charles E. Brimm Medical Arts High School in Camden, NJ., a comprehensive high school with a "break the mold" vision focused directly on medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health professions and other ancillary health care areas. In a city in which the largest growth industry is in the medical and health care fields, and where some of the state's finest health and research institutions are based, the Medical Arts High School provides its students with the skills and experiences necessary to successfully enter a college or other professional school, or an entry level position in the health care field. This unique school has been featured on CBS Weekend News, on local television and radio news pro grams, and in news and educational publications, such as: New Physicians, The Camden Courier Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Philadelphia Tribune for its outstanding results and break through innovations.

In space provided by Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and with a generous contribution from Campbell's Soup for renovations, the school opened its doors to its first ninth grade class in September, 1994. Having moved into its present facility in 1996, the school continues to fulfill its objectives and meet the educational needs of its students in many unique ways. The curriculum encompasses all of the core content areas and standards with a concentration on the sciences and math. An integrated and interrelated approach is accomplished through the use of medical themes, such as: Environmental Health, Medical Ethics, Diversity in Health Care Professions, Health Related Technology, Wellness and Diseases. The rigorous academic program, with its strong concentration in science and mathematics, the constant practice of interactive, collaborative, interdisciplinary team teaching, as well as comprehensive exposures with health care professionals, all contribute to the success of the program.

Exposures In and Out, a unique component of the school's academic program, makes the MAHS reality-based and different from any other high school in the country. On-site, the school hosts speakers and demonstrations in all fields of medicine and health care. Off-site, students regularly observe medical procedures, including eye and dental surgeries, veterinary operations and autopsies. Mentoring and shadowing of health care professionals is integral to the academic program, as are summer and school-year internships,where students apply classroom learnings in real work settings. Affiliations with the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, UMDNJ, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, West Jersey and Cooper Medical Centers, Princeton University, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Coriell Institute, as well as numerous other facilities, are key to the curriculum and promote high student motivation and achievement.

Over 90% of the students are performing at or above national averages in recent PSAT and SAT scores. Moreover, 94.1% of the students at MAHS passed the math portion of the HSPT on their first attempt, 96.1% passed writing and 88% passed reading. Students are constantly excelling in com petitions which involve all areas of curricular and extra-curricular activities. The students' high school experience is further strengthened by their involvement in service-oriented endeavors, such as: the Dayton Manor Home for Senior Citizens and the Anna Sample Center for Battered Women and Children; after-school tutorial and self-empowerment programs; peer editing; and projects with the Ronald McDonald House. Students also have the opportunity to participate in all athletic and performing arts programs offered at the other high schools in Camden. Students and staff realize that responsible, contributing adults are not born but must be molded and shaped. As a community of learners, they agree with the district's motto:
